Vineyard and Winery

With views of the majestic Olympic Mountains, Sailor Vineyard boasts uniqueness in that the wine is solely produced from grapes grown and hand reared on the property by Kit and Claire Africa, the Vineyard’s owners. The Africas named the vineyard for sailors revered by them after their careers in the sailing industry.

This stunning estate vineyard and traditional gravity winery are located just under 7 miles from the center of the desirable destination town of Port Townsend.  Sailor Vineyard is set in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains with 3 acres of vines currently, including Marechal Foch, Dolcetto and Pinot Noir and the potential for at least 3 more acres, all benefitting from the glacial till deposited over millennia. The winery which was modelled on traditional European gravity wineries lies mostly underground for natural temperature control and humidity. We have been in the wine business for 20 years, and just the two of us run this active wine business which boasts one of the few estate vineyards in the Puget Sound AVA.  The vineyard currently yields 150 cases per year -we have storage capacity up to 400 cases with further expansion.

The vineyard has a special focus on minimal intervention and dry-farming techniques and benefits from geometrically aligned vines for optimal sun exposure and air drainage. Our wine production methods match our agricultural practices, and prioritize minimal manipulation of the grapes and wine throughout the winemaking process. We don’t add sulfites and introduce only a proprietary yeast matched to our grapes to achieve a balance between consistent production and unique flavor expression. This approach emphasizes allowing the grapes’ natural flavors and characteristics to express themselves, resulting in wine that is authentic and reflective of the vintage and our vineyard.
